Ottawa’s top-consultants and lobby-firms in February
this month's surprise packages: Jangula and Company, Homeward Public Affairs, Town Advocacy, and Crestview Strategy
In today’s issue we look at February’s busiest consultants and lobby-firms in Ottawa.
The CliffsNotes version:
February was a busy month with almost 4,000 lobby communication filings. 1282 of those (33% involved external lobby consultants), and these were spread across 126 lobby firms and 619 active registrations
Among lobby firms, the surprise packages in February include Jangula and Company, Homeward Public Affairs, Ridge Strategy Group, Town Advocacy, and Forecheck Strategies
Crestview topped the firm-leaderboard of new registrations with 13 new registrations and 11 new client-relationships
1. Lobby-Firms and Lobbyists Comms Leaderboard
Exhibit 1 breaks the lobby-filings with external consultants across the major firms, showing the 25 most active firms in February, with the filings in the second column.
Which firms are the surprise packages on February’s leaderboard? A quick answer is provided by Exhibit2 from LobbyIQ's lobby-firm overview. By comparing the February columns to the 12-month activity column, we see the surprise packages in February include Jangula and Company, Homeward Public Affairs, Ridge Strategy Group, Town Advocacy, and Forecheck Strategies, none of which usually feature among the 25 biggest firms.
Jangula and Company in particular had a busy month in February, so let’s take a closer look in Exhibit 3, where we see them very active representing three main clients.
Which individual lobbyists drove communication filings activity?
Exhibit 3 shows the leaderboard of individual consultants with 9+ meetings in February. The second-last column reports on the number of active registrations represented in those communications, and the last column reports on the same consultants’ January meetings.
2. Lobby-Firms’ and Lobbyists’ Registration Leaderboards
Which lobby firms and consultants registered the most new relationships last month?
To answer this question accurately we exclude registration-renewals, and do not double-count multiple registrations per firm-client pair (i.e. more than one consultant per firm for the same client relationship).
Exhibit 5 shows February’s leaderboard, listing the number of new registrations (NewReg) as well as the number of new relationships, i.e. registrations not preceded by any existing registration between the same client and lobby-firm.
Exhibit 6 breaks down the aggregates in Exhibit 5 by clients; where the last column indicates when multiple consultants filed registrations for the same firm-client relationship.
Lastly, Exhibit 7 breaks out new registrations by consultants, showing any with 3+ new registrations, where Lucas Borchenko, Shawn Driscoll, Kevin Bosch and Eva Falk Pederson lead the pack.
In this group, Lucas Borchenko recently made the switch from Blackbird Strategies to Crestview, while Sandstone’s Shawn Driscoll and Kevin Bosch took over registrations from the recently departed Matthew Trapp.
This concludes our issue on February’s lobby-firm and consultants. Next week, we look at the keywords and issues that drove lobby communications in February.
